Corban Defeats Concordia, 3-1
PORTLAND, Ore.—After an opening-game setback, Corban College rallied for three straight wins to defeat Concordia University 3-1 (26-30, 40-24, 30-24, 30-28) in a Cascade Collegiate Conference match held at Concordia on Oct. 9.
Concordia dropped to 10-10 overall while Corban improved to 8-9 on the year. With the result, the teams shifted into a tie for fifth place in the conference standings with 6-5 records in CCC play. Corban also improved to 5-0 on the road in conference matches.
Three Corban players reached double digits in kills with Chelsea Reeher leading the court with 15 kills while teammates Rashelle Davenport and Krosten Eiler each struck for 13. Davenport added a team-high 25 digs in a solid defensive effort while Amy Thompson notched 46 assists for the Warriors.
Erika Doremus led the Cavs with 13 kills while McKenzie Rath and Nancy Burrows each tacked on 10 finishes. The league’s leader, Rachel Cotter tallied 29 digs in the contest despite playing through bruised ribs sustained during last weekend’s match versus Eastern Oregon.
“We are banged up right now, but it’s time where this team is either going to be defined by its situation with three starters out for the season or it will redefine itself and collectively move forward,” Concordia head coach Christopher Duenow said. “The bottom line is we are stuck a bit right now and every individual has to be responsible for elevating their own level of play.”
Concordia returns to action to host Whitworth College in the team’s final non-conference match of the season on Thursday, Oct. 11. Corban continues CCC play when they travel to Northwest Christian on Friday, Oct. 12. Both matches are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
