Concordia Posts 10th Consecutive Shutout
PORTLAND, Ore.—With two goals inside the first six minutes and four inside of the first 20, the Concordia University women’s soccer team earned its 10th straight win, all via shutout, with a 5-0 victory at home against The College of Idaho.
Overall, the No. 4-ranked Concordia Cavaliers improved its record to 13-2-0 and its Cascade Collegiate Conference record to 8-0-0. The College of Idaho, formerly known as Albertson College of Idaho, dropped to 7-5-2 on the season with a 4-2-2 mark in CCC play.
In less than three minutes, Justine Pronovost (Milwaukie, Ore.) found the net with a low 17-yard shot for the junior’s 11th goal of the season. Three minutes later, Shea Miller (Azalea, Ore.) drove a long arcing shot into the top left corner for the team’s second goal.
Conference goal-scoring leader Jessica Ramback (Mill Creek, Wash.) provided the third and fourth Concordia connections in the 14th and 19th minute to bring her total to 17 goals on the year and give the team a commanding 4-0 lead before the 20-minute mark. The four Concordia goals were generated from five shot attempts, the lone miss being a Ramback header in the 9th minute which sailed right of the post.
Miller provide the game’s solo second-period goal with a 16-yard chip over the Yote goalkeeper. Bouncing off the crossbar in the 67th minute, Miller’s shot deflected back and rolled into the net.
“We’ve typically been a second-half team and one of the things we stressed today was to have a better performance in the first period,” Concordia head coach Grant Landy said. “We certainly want to become a ninety-minute team and today we moved closer to that goal.”
Led by Jackie Pronovost (Milwaukie, Ore.), Samantha Smith (Gresham, Ore.), Keri Lane (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Erin Forge’t (Las Vegas, Nev.) the Concordia defense limited the Yotes to one shot in the match, an 18th-minute strike saved by Cavalier goalie Leah Flores (Vancouver, Wash).
“Sometimes those players get overlooked when you look at a box score,” Landy said. “But what they have done the past 10 games has been remarkable.”
Adrienne Hagen (Orting, Wash.) played the final 45 minutes in goal to preserve the shutout, the team’s 11th on the year. Flores received the win to up her season record to 10-1-0 and lower her goals against average to 0.26 goals allowed per game.
The Cavaliers return to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 13, to continue CCC action with a 1 p.n. match at The Yard against Eastern Oregon.
“We are peaking at the right time and we will want to honor the seniors and play well for them tomorrow.”
