College of Idaho Defeats Evergreen on OT Goal
CALDWELL, Idaho - Michael Delgado placed a left-footed shot in the back of the net with just under six minutes remaining in the second overtime as The College of Idaho men's soccer team defeated Evergreen State, 2-1, this afternoon at Symms Field.
Brian Weiss placed a long ball up the left side, with Mauricio Both slotting a through-ball between a pair of defenders to Delgado on the left side of the box, with the senior from Vallivue High beating keeper Matt Stalnik for the winner, as the Coyotes (9-4-1, 6-3-1 CCC) won their third match in a row.
Despite having 30 shots in the match, including 19 on goal, the Yotes could not break Stalnik's wall until the 71st minute, when The C of I received a penalty kick for a foul in the box. Antonio Bautista converted the chance, tying the game at 1-1.
Stalnik was the story, as the Geoduck (5-8-1, 4-5-1) keeper made 14 saves - including a trio of diving stops to keep the Yotes off the board. Evergreen got the game's first goal in the 14th minute, as Eduardo Milan converted a penalty kick.
"Credit their keeper, he played outstanding today," said Coyote head coach Brian Smith. "We battled hard all afternoon and finally were able to break through. That was a great goal to win it - Mauricio (Both) had a great pass to Michael (Delgado), and what a poised finish."
The C of I hits the road next weekend, traveling to Northwest Christian and Corban.
