Concordia Blanks Corban, 2-0
PORTLAND, Ore.—Concordia University’s Bryan Iotte scored a 42nd-minute goal and Tyler Camp added an insurance score in the 79th minute for a 2-0 win against Corban College in a Cascade Collegiate Conference men’s soccer match at The Yard.
With the victory, Concordia improved to 11-3-0 on the season with a 9-1-0 conference record. Corban dropped to 5-7-2 with a 3-5-2 CCC mark.
Battling for much of the first half in a scoreless match, Iotte (Auburn, Wash.) one-timed a rebound from a Kossivi Alokpovi (Glendale, Ariz.) shot into the bottom left corner of the net to break the stalemate. Receiving a long cross from Joey Graham (Pasco, Wash.), Camp (Vancouver, Wash.) connected for his eight goal of the season with an eight-yard blast late in the second period to give the Cavaliers the 2-0 lead.
“It was another solid performance by the guys,” Concordia head coach Dan Birkey said. “They broke down the dangerous counterattacks that Corban likes to produce and we worked hard to generate scoring opportunities and stuck to the task.”
In the contest, Concordia outshot the Warriors 19-4 while creating nine corner kicks to Corban’s three. Garrett Staples (Eugene, Ore.) stopped one shot while playing the full 90 minutes in goal for the Cavs, in the process, earning his 10th win and sixth shutout of the season.
“It was a game dedicated to honor Doug Wolvert, who was inducted into the CU Athletic Hall of Fame today,” Birkey said. “He spoke with the team in the changing room before the game and he asked them for a two-nil result and they got it. I told him next time he speaks to us to ask for four-nil.”
The Cavaliers return to the pitch on Oct. 18 when they travel to Northwest University in Kirkland, Wash. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
