Burrow Leads Cavs in Evergreen Sweep

PORTLAND,Ore.— Behind a career-high hitting percentage from freshman Nancy Burrows, the Concordia University volleyball team swept The Evergreen State College 3-0 (30-13, 30-18, 30-12) in Cascade Collegiate Conference action on Oct. 19.

With the win, Concordia moved to 13-10 on the year and 8-5 in conference play while Evergreen State fell to 0-13 on the season.

Burrows (Reno, Nev.) led the offensive charge with 12 kills and a career-high .409 hitting percentage. Teammate Raluca Dinca (Portland, Ore.) added a match-high 16 kills countered with only four errors to hit at a .286 rate, helping the team attack for a .347 conversion rate.

Splitting setting duties Desiree Fuhrmann (Sumner, Wash.) tallied 24 assists while freshman Kaitlinn Moody (Bend, Ore.) garnered 20 assists, 19 of which came in the third game. The conference leader in the category, Rachel Cotter (Estacada, Ore.) notched 20 digs to lead the court defensively.

In the opener, the Geoducks held an early 9-6 advantage before the Cavaliers rallied for 24 of the next 28 points, a spurt which included three successful swings by Dinca. Squared at 14 in the second game, Concordia pulled away with 11 of the game’s final 12 points with Erika Doremus (Port Orchard, Wash.) claiming three late kills while Burrows led the charge in the final game with seven of the team’s 20 kills.

“We weren’t as crisp at the beginning of the first two games as we wanted to be,” Concordia head coach Christopher Duenow said, “but they took it upon themselves to play more assertively as each game progressed.”

The Geoducks were paced 11 assists by Katie Huston and six kills and 14 digs by Sabrina Tan.

Concordia returns to the court on Saturday, Oct. 19, with a home conference match against Northwest University. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. inside the Cavalier Gymnasium.

“Northwest is typically a tough match-up for us,” Duenow said. “We will have to make it a priority to bring the same level of efficiency as we showed today.”
