PORTLAND,Ore.— The Concordia University men’s soccer team scored early and scored late to secure a 2-1 win over The Evergreen State College on a muddy field at The Yard on Oct. 20.

Tied at one late in the second period, the Cavaliers forced an attack with Scott Bernards taking a shot at the Geoduck defense at the 79:19 mark in the game. With the shot blocked back by an opponent, sophomore Kossivi Alopovi found the loose ball and fired from eight yards out for the game-winning score.

With the win, Concordia moved to 13-3-0 overall and 11-1-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Evergreen fell to 5-10-1 with a 4-7-1 mark in the CCC. The result guarantees the Cavs a share of the conference crown with two games to go and a two-game lead over Warner Pacific.

“Alokpivi muscled us a win today.” Concordia head coach Dan Birkey said. “He showed a great deal of tact and strength by putting the team on his shoulders today.”

Concordia will try for an outright conference championship on Monday, Oct. 22 when they host Cascade College. Due to field conditions, the game has been shifted to Strasser Field in northeast Portland’s Delta Park. Kickoff is scheduled to remain at 3 p.m.
