EOU Outlasts Concordia
PORTLAND, Ore.–In a match where two games required extended play to determine the victor, Eastern Oregon pushed past Concordia 3-2 (30-32, 30-19, 22-30, 30-19, 16-14) in Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball action at the Concordia Gymnasium on Oct. 6.
Eastern Oregon improved to 9-6 on the season while Concordia dropped to 10-9. With both teams entering the contest with identical conference records, Eastern Oregon moved into a tie for third place in the standings aside Oregon Tech at 7-3 while Concordia dropped to fifth with a 6-4 mark.
Grace Deboodt powered the way for Eastern Oregon with 21 kills, one of three Mountaineers in double-digits offensively. A sophomore from Prineville, Ore., Deboodt recorded five kills in three of the five games.
“Deboodt was a force. I don’t think anyone in the conference has solved the puzzle to stop her yet,” Concordia head coach Christopher Duenow said.
The Cavaliers were led by senior libero Rachel Cotter (Estacada, Ore.), who shattered her own school record with 54 digs, 14 more than her previous best output. Erika Doremus (Port Orchard, Wash.) and Amy Schaur (University Place, Wash.) also notched career highs with Doremus connecting on 17 kills and Schaur adding 12. Desiree Fuhrmann (Sumner, Wash.) also set a career high with a match-high 54 assists
“Cotter really put on a clinic tonight, not only in terms of effort and intensity, but also in terms of elevating her ability to see the game,” Duenow said.
The Cavaliers return to the court on Tuesday, Oct. 9 to host Corban College. The same day, Eastern Oregon will travel to Walla Walla College for its last non-conference game of the season.
