T-Birds Fly Past Simpson
PORTLAND, Ore. - Five Thunderbids scored in double figures as Cascade used a balanced attack to defeat Simpson University 81-58 at the Thunderdome tonight.
Raquel Morin came off the bench to tally a game high 18 points tospark Cascade, who has started the season with two straight wins.
The teams battled to a 12-12 tie in the early going before the T-Birds pushed aheadto a 30-20 lead thanks to Morin's 8 points in the period. A scrappy RedHawk squad fought back with an 8-2 run to draw within four, but a quick steal and layup by Cascade upped the lead to 34-28 at the half and gave the momentum to the hosts.
The steady full court pressure applied by the T-Birds began to pay off in the second half, as Cascade methodically stretched the advantage out to 24 points with 7:24 to play. Kelsey Stone fired in 3 treys in the half, and Morin added 10 more for Cascade. An Amy Russell three pointer gave Cascade its largest lead at 76-50 with just over 3 minuteson the clock.
Along with Morin, Te Awhina Aranui (13), Russell (13), Christina Brito (11), and Stone (10) scored in double figures for the Thunderbirds. Aranui continued her record breaking pace in rebounding with 15 caroms.
Sara Fairburn and Katie Garringer each scored 14 points for Simpson in their season opener. Chalynn Passmore added 11 points and 11 rebounds.
