Warriors Fall to Hot-Shooting Loggers of Puget Sound
TACOMA, Wash. - Despite a team-high 22 points from junior Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.), Corban's men's basketball team fell victim to a hot-shooting Puget Sound squad, 124-95, on Friday in the final game of the Allstate Cantillana Tip-Off Classic inside Memorial Fieldhouse.
With the host Loggers jumping out to a quick 12-0 lead in the opening 90 seconds of the game, Corban had to re-group and hope to get back in the game. Unfortunately for the Warriors, the hot-shooting performance that Puget Sound began the game with continued and Corban could not get any closer than 13 points in the waning minutes of the first half.
In the closing minutes of the game, Corban began to cut the Loggers' lead down and got within 21 points before UPS's head coach brought his original starting five back into the game and extended the lead to the final margin of 29 points (124-95) en route to securing the season-opening victory for the host Loggers of Puget Sound.
Along with Douglas' 11-for-13 shooting performance from the field, senior Hannes Gehring (Lake Oswego, Ore.) added 16 points with most of them coming at the free throw line as the 6-foot-3 forward went 9-for-13 at the charity stripe. Junior Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.) and freshman Clay Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) chipped in with 12 and 8 points respectively, while Gehring grabbed a game-high six rebounds to go along with Douglas and senior Ben Sisler (Corvallis, Ore.) who pulled down five boards each.
For the Loggers, Taylor Marsh scored a game-high 27 points on 9-for-19 shooting from the field including an amazing 7-for-13 performance from beyond the 3-point line. Along with Marsh, Antwan Williams and Jason Foster added 26 and 24 points respectively while Williams grabbed a game-high tying six rebounds and handed out a game-high 10 assists.
As a team, Corban shot 33-for-62 (53.2%) from the field, including a season-high 24-for-37 (64.9%) from the free throw line. On the other hand, Puget Sound torched the nets all night shooting 47-for-79 (59.5%) from the field including a 15-for-31 (48.4%) performance from beyond the arc and a 15-for-25 (60.0%) showing at the free throw line.
With the loss, Corban falls to 1-1 on the young season while Puget Sound improves to 1-0. The Warriors will return to action on Saturday, November 17th, when Corban battles NCAA Division II member Western Oregon beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Monmouth.
