Corban Falls to Puget Suond, 64-50
TACOMA, Wash. – Senior Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) scored a team-high 14 points, as Corban's women's basketball team fell to the University of Puget Sound, 64-50, in the finale of the Allstate Cantillana Tip-Off Classic on Saturday inside Memorial Fieldhouse.
Looking to pick up its first victory of the season, Corban went head-to-head with the pre-season Northwest Conference favorite and hung with the host Loggers for most of the first half trailing by a mere six points (29-23) at intermission despite shooting 8-for-30 (26.7%) over the opening twenty minutes.
In the second half, Corban fell victim to Puget Sound shooting 5-for-9 (55.6%) from beyond the three-point line while the Warriors were unable to connect on either of their three long-distance attempts en route to falling by 14 points (64-50) in the end.
Along with Steigleman, sophomore Emily Goette (Aumsville, Ore.) and junior Ashley Connell (Spokane, Wash.) added 10 and 9 points respectively. Meanwhile, junior Margie Lou Correll (Ephrata, Wash.), junior Kailey Bostwick (Medford, Ore.), and senior Mandy Peterson (Portland, Ore.) were the only other Warriors to record points as the trio combined to score a total of 17 points. Goette and Connell led the Warriors with on the boards with a team-high six rebounds each, while Steigleman and Peterson pulled down five boards apiece.
For Puget Sound, Laura Hirsh led all players with a game-high 20 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc and a perfect 5-for-5 at the free throw line. On the boards, Marissa Cain grabbed a game-high eight rebounds while Karen Chase and Natasha Ludwig pulled down 6 and 5 boards respectively.
As a team, Corban shot 18-for-53 (34.0%) from the field including 13-for-16 (81.3%) from the free throw line. On the other hand, Puget Sound was 20-for-57 (35.1%) from the field, including 8-for-15 (53.3%) from beyond the arc and 16-for-23 (69.6%) from the free throw line.
With the loss, Corban falls to 0-3 on the season while Puget Sound improves to 2-0 overall. The Warriors are next in action on Friday, November 23rd, when they host California Pacific Conference member William Jessup University beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
