CAMAS, Wash. – Two first-period goals in a 72-second span by Simon Fraser doomed Concordia University’s hopes of repeating as NAIA Region I champions, falling to the Clan 3-0 in men’s soccer action at Doc Harris Stadium.

Despite a 6-0 disadvantage in corner kicks in the first period, the Clan opened the game’s scoring with an unassisted blast by Scott McEachern in the 19th minute. Connecting from 15 yards away, McEachern’s shot misdirected Cavalier goalkeeper Garrett Staples (Eugene, Ore.) after glancing off a Concordia defender.

In the following minute, Justin Carvery doubled the Simon Fraser lead with a 30-yard strike towards the far post, sneaking past the right-handed reach of Staples and into the net, giving the Clan two goals in only three shot attempts.

Carvery rounded out the scoring with a 40th minute goal after successive passes by Leigh Sembaluk and Lucas Barrett, giving Carvery an open lane towards net, unleashing a shot from 20 yards out. Going vertical for the block, Staples got a glove on the sphere only to see the ball keep its momentum and carry into the net.

For the match, Simon Fraser tallied 13 total shots while holding Concordia to six. Unchallenged, Thomas Lindley patrolled the goal for the Clan in the win and Staples collected three saves while taking the loss for the Cavs.
