Northwest U. Opens With Victory Over Concordia
KIRKLAND, WA – Northwest University defeated Concordia, 75-65, in opening night Cascade Conference play in men's basketball.
With NU sporting just a one point lead, 13-12, at the :26 mark in the first half, the Eagles went on a 16-2 run to increase their lead to 29-14 with 7:03 left in the first half and took a 37-23 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Eagles never trailed the entire game. NU’s biggest lead of the game came at the 11:05 mark as they held a 55-35 margin over the Cavs.
Chase Van Cleave (Jr., Puyallup, WA/Rogers HS) led Northwest (5-3, 1-0 CCC) with 17 points on 5 for 7 shooting from the 3-point line. Senior Pat Mattson (Everett, WA/Evergreen State College) scored 16 points, junior point guard Luke Hammond (Mountlake Terrace, WA/BCC) dropped in 13 and post Greg George (Fr., Seattle, WA/Lake Washington HS) had 11 points for Northwest. NU shot 59.6% from 2-point range and 68.8% from the 3-point line (11 for 16). The Eagles won the rebounding battle, 32-29.
Concordia (2-3, 0-1 CCC) was led by Ryan Johnson’s (Sr., Vancouver, WA/Mt. Hood CC) 19 points, Desmond Meray (So., Spanaway, WA/Bethel HS) scored 15 and Senior Cody Aker (Portland, OR/Wilson HS) contributed 10 points for the Cavaliers. Concordia managed 40% shooting from 2-point range and 23% from the 3-point arc.
Northwest U. resumes play tomorrow evening as they host Corban College in Kirkland and Concordia travels to Olympia to take on The Evergreen State College. Both games a slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.
