Northwest U. Defeats Concordia

KIRKLAND, WA – Northwest University turned around a six point deficit at the half by outscoring Concordia of Portland by 10 in the second half to record a close 62-58 Cascade Conference opening night victory.

Concordia had built their 29-23 half time to lead by ten, 49-39, with Joyce Oniah’s offensive rebound and tip in with 8:50 remaining in the game. Northwest then made their run with 8:06 on the clock out scoring the Cavaliers 12 to 2 to knot the score up on Erika Hornyak’s two freethrows with 5:05 left in the contest. The lead swung back and forth several times but the Eagles took the lead for good with Brittany Bowsher’s jumper with 1:33 remaining to put NU up 59-58. Three more freethrows by Northwest was the only scoring the remainder of the game as NU pulled out the close, opening night victory.

Junior Brittany Bowsher (Issaquah, WA/Issaquah HS) led Northwest (1-3, 1-0 CCC) with 21 points while teammate Erika Hornyak (Everett, WA/Everett HS) dropped in 17 in the come back win for the Eagles. Guard Rachel Travis (Jr., North Bend, WA/Mt. Si HS) scored 9 points on the night. Northwest U. out rebounded Concordia 32-29. The Eagles managed only 36.4% shooting from 2-point range on the night.
Danielle Clauson (Fr., Edmonds, WA/Kings HS) led Concordia (2-5, 0-1 CCC) with a double-double, with 14 points and 12 rebounds on the night. Senior Kelsey Schaefer (Vancouver, WA/Clark JC) scored 12 points for the Cavaliers who shot 37.3% for the game. Junior Joyce Oniah (Portland, OR/Franklin HS) and teammate Sarah Eischen (Fr., Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro HS).

Northwest U. hosts Corban College of Salem tomorrow night and Concordia travels to Olympia to take on The Evergreen State College. Both games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
