Northwest Defeats Corban, 92-86

KIRKLAND, WA – Northwest University defeated Corban College, 92-86, in a close Cascade Conference contest tonight for their second straight conference win.

After Northwest U. jumped out to a 19-8 first half lead, Corban settled down and went on an 11-2 run of their own to make the score 21-19 at the 12:49 mark. NU then took a ten point lead, 31-21, after a 10-2 run of their own including six straight freethrows by NU guard Chase Van Cleave who was fouled on two consecutive three point attempts. A jumper by Wade Douglas brought Corban back once again to within 2 points and another jumper by guard Paul Martin tied the score at 37 with 4:49 left in the half. After two more ties, Doug Seaton’s offensive rebound and tip-in with 3 seconds left on the clock gave Northwest a 44-42 lead at halftime.

In the second half, a jumper by Jason Braun at the 13:06 mark gave Corban their first lead at 60-58. The half saw six more lead changes along with several ties until NU’s Luke Hammond’s 3-pointer put the Eagles up for good, 77-72, with 4:05 left in the contest. Corban pulled to within one point at 79-78 with 2:01 remaining, but Hammond’s 5 for 6 shooting from the freethrow line down the stretch sealed the victory for Northwest.

Northwest U. (6-3, 2-0 CCC) had five players in double figures tonight led by junior Eddie Coulson (N. Las Vegas, NV/Western Washington U.) who scored 23 points. Junior guard, Luke Hammond (Mountlake Terrace, WA/BCC) scored 18 points while teammate Pat Mattson (Sr., Everett, WA/Evergreen State College) dropped in 16 for the Eagles. Chase Van Cleave (Puyallup, WA/Rogers HS) scored 12 points and had 7 assists, and freshman post, Greg George (Seattle, WA/Lake Washington HS) finished with 13 points on the night for NU. The Eagles managed to shoot 43.7% on the night and 41.9% from the 3-point line.

Corban (2-5, 0-2 CCC) was led by junior forward Wade Douglas (Ontario, OR/Treasure Valley CC) with his game high 29 points and 9 rebounds. Clay Martin (Fr., Beaverton, OR/Aloha HS) contributed 19 points and also had 9 rebounds for the Warriors from Salem, Oregon. Junior Jason Braun (Dallas, OR/Dallas HS) totaled 13 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Corban won the battle of the boards, out rebounding NU, 42-32. Corban shot 51.5% from 2 point range and 41.7% from the 3-point arc.
Northwest will be on the road next weekend for two non-conference games against Northwest Conference schools, Pacific Lutheran and George Fox. Corban will return to Salem to host Montana State University-Northern and Walla Walla University next weekend in their F&W Fence Basketball Classic.
