PORTLAND, Ore. -- This month, the Concordia baseball team traveled to Athey Creek Middle School in West Linn, Ore., to begin their annual project with three seventh-grade classes.

The players will join students' from Mrs. Bowen's, Mr. Geigle's, and Ms. Meade's classes in creating a biographical article about the Concordia players.

The Cavalier players communicate with the middle school students by e-mail throughout the year, answering interview questions to create the articles. The middle school classes follow the Concordia players' progress throughout the year through Internet stories and online statistics. The project culminates with a pizza feed and kickball games.

This project, a partnership started by Concordia pitching coach Larry Grey, head coach Rob Vance, and Grey's daughter, Andrea, who is a seventh grade teacher at Athey Creek, is entering its ninth year.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for our players to give back to students in the local area," Vance said. "Our players gain a wonderful experience and the middle school students are exposed to a fine group of young men."
