Steigleman Outshines Beacons of NCC

SALEM, Ore. – Senior Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) and sophomore Emily Goette (Aumsville, Ore.) combined for a total of 42 points, as Corban’s women’s basketball team defeated the Beacons of Northwest Christian College, 65-52, Wednesday in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.

Steigleman had a season and game-high 26 points, shooting 13-for-19 from the field and extending her streak to six straight games of 20-plus points. Goette added a quiet 16 points with 7-for-12 shooting from the field and six rebounds.

The game was evenly matched through the first 10 minutes with neither team taking the lead by more than four points. Steigleman, then poured in 14 points in the remainder of the half, making up over half of the team’s points.

With the 5-foot-10 forward’s offensive attack, the Warriors built a nine-point lead (26-17) heading into the locker room at the half. In the opening twenty minutes, the Warriors shot 13-for-29 (44.8%) from the field in comparison to Northwest Christian’s 7-for-28 (25%).

In the second half, however, the Beacons played a much closer game shooting 12-for-29 (41.4%) from the field, but the Warriors’ 15-for-33 (45.5%) was enough to hold off Northwest Christian. The Warriors out scored the visiting Beacons by four (39-35) in the second half, leaving the game in favor of Corban by the final margin of 13 points (65-52).

The Warriors hauled down 50 rebounds and had seven blocks throughout the game compared to the Beacons’ 30 rebounds and one block. Junior Ashley Connell (Spokane, Wash.) pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, while the Warriors’ 20 assists doubled Northwest Christians’ 10 with five of them coming from junior Kailey Bostwick (Medford, Ore.).

Northwest Christian was led by Elise Gray and Lori Renner who had 18 points and 12 points respectively. Amy Croll added a game-high four steals to the team’s total of nine for the game.

With the win, Corban takes its record to 6-5 overall, 2-1 in CCC play. Meanwhile, Northwest Christian drops to 8-6 overall, 2-2 in CCC action. The Warriors will return to action on Friday, December 28th, where they will square off in the first round of the Holiday Inn Christmas Bash against tournament-host and NCAA Division II member Mesa State College beginning at 6:00 p.m. (4:00 p.m. on the West Coast) in Grand Junction,
