SOU Women Defeat Northwest
ASHLAND - The SOU Raider Women's basketball team won its sixth consecutive game Wednesday night beating the Northwest University Eagles 78-51 in Cascade Conference action at McNeal Pavilion. Once again it was go-to players Chelsey Muri and Jacki Speer who led the way for the Raiders.
SOU improves to 9-2 on the season and 3-1 in Cascade Conference play, while Northwest drops to 2-8.
Coach Lynn Kennedy's team built a double digit halftime lead and never let Northwest back into the game. SOU was led by Jackie Speer of Centralia, WA. and her game high 16 points and 8 rebounds.
Emily Brookins of Crater High, hit 3 three-pointers in the game en-route to 14 points and Chelsey Muri added 11 points and 5 assists. Ashley Baker dominated the glass with a game high 12 rebounds.
Northwest got a solid performance from Chelsea Drivstuen who scored 15 points but overall the SOU defense held Northwest to just 25% shooting for the game. Brittany Bowsher, NU's leading scorer, was held to just 7 points.
The key stat for the game involved rebounding. SOU cleared 63 rebounds compared to Northwest's 34 boards.
SOU is off to their best start since 2002-03. The Raiders play at the Menlo Tournament on December 29-30, and return home to play Simpson College at McNeal Pavilion on Wednesday, January 2, 2008. Next league games are scheduled for January 4-5 at Concordia and Corban.
