Raiders Come Up Big in Win over Rocky Mountain

ATHERTON, Calif. -- Down by one at halftime, the SOU Women's basketball team went up by 17 midway through the second half and went on to beat Rocky Mountain College of Billings, Montana 64-49 in the Menlo Basketball Classic.

With the win, SOU moves to 10-2 overall and winners of seven consecutive games. Coach Lynn Kennedy says, "we played extremely well against a good physicial team and against a style of ball we usually don't see. Against Menlo, we'll need to play better and we're very capable of that."

SOU had three players in double figures led by Chelsey Muri's 15 points. Jacki Speer added 12 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Rhiannon Dickison contributed 10 points on 4-6 shooting from the field. Overall, SOU shot 37% for the game, were 14-20 free throw shooting and were six-14 from three point range.

Rocky Mountain, an NAIA Division I team, 6-10 overall was led by Keri Siewert who had 10 points. Josie Evans had 9 while Jenns Sawyer and Sarah Madinger each had eight for Rocky.

SOU controlled the boards by a 44-27 margin. Turnovers, SOU 23, Rocky 28. SOU outscored Rocky Mountain 35-19 in the second half in part Kennedy said because, "we held them to 6-21 shooting in the second half and took away their three point opportunities. They are a lot like Holy Names, athletic and big and strong, but our defense was terrific."

SOU playes host Menlo College, Sunday at 3:30 p.m., They return for a home game in Ashland Wednesday, January 2, against Simpson College at 7 p.m. and return to Cascade Conference play, January 4-5 on the road at Concordia and Corban.
