Goette Scores 23, but Corban Falls to WOU
MONMOUTH, Ore. – Sophomore Emily Goette (Aumsville, Ore.) led all scorers with a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds, as Corban's women's basketball team fell to NCAA Division II member Western Oregon, 80-61, Friday night at the Physical Education Building.
Western Oregon went on an 18-2 run early in the second half, pulling away from visiting Corban to win the non-conference women’s basketball battle.
The Wolves moved to 2-3 with the win, while Corban dropped to 4-5.
Corban jumped out to an early lead in the first half (6-0) and held a slight advantage until Whitney Chase’s lay-in gave the Wolves a 13-12 margin with 10:23 to go in the half. Western Oregon would never trail again, taking a 35-29 margin into the locker room at the half.
The Warriors pulled to within four points in the opening moments of the second half (37-33), but Western promptly outscored their NAIA visitors 18-2 in the next seven minutes to salt the game away.
WOU outscored Corban 45-32 in the second half, shaking off the rust of 13 days of no games. The hosts led by as many as 32 points in the second half before settling for the 19-point final win.
Leada Berkey led the visitors with 16 points and Chase was also in double figures with 11. Eleven different Wolves players scored in the contest.
Goette led all scorers with her game-high point performance to go along with nine rebounds, potting 17 points in the first half. Senior Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) had double-double numbers with 21 points and 10 boards. Corban won the rebound battle, 44-36, but turned the ball over 29 times to WOU’s 12.
Corban will be off for eight days before hosting NCAA Division III member Pacific on Saturday, December 15th, beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
