Whitworth Defeats Northwest in UPS Tournament

TACOMA, WA - Rachel Travis' 3-pointer with 1 second left wasn't enough as the Whitworth Pirates squeaked out an 83-82 victory over the Northwest University Eagles in the Nick-N-Willy's Winter Classic at UPS.

In a close first half of play, Northwest U. built a 29-23 lead with 6:17 left, but the Pirates came back and tied the game on Liz Horiatis' jumper with 5:19 left in the half. Whitworth then took the lead for the remainder of the half on Teresa Zeitler's 3-pointer at the 5:01 mark and they would maintain the lead and go into the locker room with a seven point lead at 45-38.

Four straight points to start the second half put Whitworth up 49-38 and in the lead for the remainder of the game. The Pirates biggest lead was 55-43 at the 15:31 mark but Northwest U. would come back to pull within three points at 69-66 with 7:24 left in the contest, but Tiffany Corigliano would put Whitworth up by eleven, 79-68 with 4:09 left. NU made a run at the end going on an 11-2 run to pull within 2 points, 81-79, on Lydia Llewellyn's jumper with just 12 seconds left in the game. Two free throws by Alida Bower with 4 seconds remaining sealed the game for Whitworth as Travis' 3-pointer went in as the buzzer sounded.
