Season-High Scoring Propels Concordia vs. Lewis & Clark

PORTLAND, Ore. –Behind 19 points by senior point guard Denise Benedict, the Concordia University women’s basketball netted a season-high scoring effort for a 72-53 non-conference home win over crosstown foe Lewis & Clark College on Dec. 8.

With the win, Concordia inched closer to .500 with a 4-5 overall record while the Pioneers dropped below the mark at 3-4.

Benedict (Ridgefield, Wash./Prairie H.S.), one of four Cavs in double figures, finished 6-of-6 from the free throw line and added a trio of clutch three pointers for her game-high and season-high 19-point sum.

Concordia managed 32 percent shooting from the floor in the first half but held Lewis & Clark to a 26 percent rate to head to the locker rooms with a 29-21 advantage.

In the second half, Benedict and Ann Snodderly (Portland, Ore./Franklin H.S.) combined for 26 of the team’s 43 point to extend the Cavalier lead to as many as 26 with 10 minutes remaining before finishing with the 19-point spread.

“We are really proud of the whole team and their effort today,” Concordia head coach Aaron Christian said. “We had a balanced attack and did an excellent job of staying with the gameplan.”

Crystal Castle led the Pioneers with 17 points while Concordia’s Danielle Clauson (Edmonds, Wash./King’s H.S.) hauled in a game0high seven rebounds.

Concordia returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 15 when they travel to Tacoma, Wash., to face Pacific Lutheran. The two teams were originally slated to battle on Dec. 7 but the game was forced to be rescheduled due to travel concerns regarding recent flooding along Interstate 5. Opening tip is slated for 6 p.m.
