Two Late Goals Trip Cavs vs. Simon Fraser
LANGLEY, B.C. - After settling for a 110-minute stalemate last season, Simon Fraser finally pushed a goal past the Concordia defense to defeat the Cavaliers 2-0 in men’s soccer action held at Spartan Stadium on the campus of Trinity Western University.
With the loss, Concordia dropped to 1-1-0 on the young season. Simon Fraser improved to 1-0-1 on the year after playing Trinity Western to a draw earlier in the week.
After adding another 72 minutes of scoreless play to the streak, Simon Fraser’s Luca Bellisomo took a touch pass from teammate Liam Smith and planted the ball into the right side of the net past Cavalier goalkeeper Garrett Staples (Eugene, Ore.) to take a 1-0 lead.
Pressing for a goal, the Cavs surrendered a second goal with the Clan’s Leigh Sernbaluk beating a defender and crossing the ball over to a waiting Justin Carvery, who successfully placed the ball into net from inside the box in the 82nd minute.
Making his first start of the year, Staples, a returning NAIA honorable mention All-American, denied six Clan shot attempts in the loss.
Simon Fraser outshot the Cavaliers 15-3 in the contest and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Senior CU captain Joe Givens was handed a red card, the team’s first of the year, in the 76th minute.
The Cavaliers will make a return trip to Canada to face the University of British Columbia on Wednesday, August 29. Concordia’s first home match is slated for Monday, September 3 at The Yard.
