T-Bird Comeback Thwarted by Late Goal

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A comeback bid by Cascade was denied by a late game-winning goal from Corban College as the T-Birds fell 4-3 in exciting CCC action today at Williams & Smith Field.

Finding themselves down 3-1 with the game slipping away, Cascade scored on a Gerardo Cifuentes penalty kick (his second of the game) and a Nic Martinez goal to draw even in the late going. As the T-Birds pressed forward to attempt to notch the game winner, Corban took advantage with a nice counterattack through ball and finish by Joshua Crain.

In a first half that saw Cascade outshoot the visiting Warriors 14-4, The T-Birds could muster only a Cifuentes penalty kick. Corban, however, efficiently found the back of the net with three of their four shots. Two of those goals were by Ayouba Moussa who collected his fourth and fifth goals on the year.

In the 74th minute, Cifuentes converted on his second PK to swing the momentum to the hosts. Just three minutes later, Martinez booted home his first collegiate goal off a deflection from Peter Pickett to tie the score. That's when Crain saved the day for Corban, receiving a nice through ball from Collin Box and finishing left post to conclude the scoring.

Cascade outshot the Warriors 22-11, with Corban's Aaron Franklin making 10 saves.

"We did some great things today," said head coach Jeremy Schwartz. "We possessed the ball for a majority of the match, and attacked the goal time and time again. I fully expect that we will start scoring in bunches real soon. Corban, to its credit, did what it needed to do to win. They made the most of their opportunities, and we aren't doing that quite yet."
