Cavs Defeat NCC For 7th Straight
PORTLAND, Ore.—The Concordia University volleyball team continued its hot streak with its seventh straight win after a 3-0 (30-28, 30-13, 30-26) win at home against Northwest Christian College in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.
Now 8-5 on the year, Concordia also extended its conference record to 4-0. Northwest Christian dropped to 6-4 with a 1-2 mark in conference play.
The Cavaliers staged a late comeback in the opening game for a 30-28 win. Sophomore Mariana Toscano (Portland, Ore.) keyed the rally with two important kills in two attacks to close out the game.
“Mariana did a great job of providing a spark late in the first game,” Concordia head coach Christopher Duenow said. “About the time we were down a few points, she providing that extra push at the end.”
Behind four kills apiece by Lindsay Fryer (Bremerton, Wash.) and Erika Doremus (Port Orchard, Wash.), a fast start in the second game resulted in a 30-13 win before a 30-26 clincher in the finale.
Fryer led the floor with 11 kills, followed by the 10 struck by Doremus. Splitting setting duties, Desiree Fuhrmann (Sumner, Wash.) and Lauren Richards (Ventura, Calif.) tallied 44 assists with Fuhrmann finishing with a 24-20 edge in the department.
Senior libero Rachel Cotter (Estacada, Ore.) recorded a game-high 15 digs defensively for the Cavaliers. As a team Concordia received 13 aces with Kim Lindow (Gresham, Ore.) generating four points off the serve.
The Cavaliers held the Beacons to a .095 hitting percentage overall with Charlie Van Loon and Cotie Howard notching five kills each to lead NCC.
“Everybody on the roster is having a positive say in the results,” Duenow said. “Being able to close out teams in three games is always a difficult task.”
“It takes quality and consistency to get to the results that we have had lately,” Duenow added. “But it is important that we stay focus on the bigger goals that we set out in the beginning of the season and to the commitment to getting better everyday.”
Concordia will next take the court on Friday, Sept. 21, when its hosts Southern Oregon University. First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the Cavalier Gymnasium.
