T-Birds Upset College of Idaho for 1st CCC Win
PORTLAND, Ore. -- In a hard fought match versus the visiting Albertson Coyotes, the Thunderbirds claimed their first win of the season with a stellar 2-1 victory. The Coyotes struggled to find the back of the net and remained scoreless until late in the second half.
Sophomore Nic Martinez had a standout performance, making valuable defensive plays and connecting with Tim Danna on a free kick to push Cascade past Albertson early in the first half.
After the break, Cascade scored again in the 74th minute when senior Kevin Youatt tapped the ball in from an Edson Zacarias corner kick to put the Thunderbirds up 2-0. Despite the 2 goal deficit, the Coyotes intensified the pressure and had an opportunity to gain some momentum with Jesus Lopez’s goal from a corner kick in the 79th minute. Conditioning and tight defense proved to be important factors for the T-Birds with Albertson taking 14 of their total 19 shots at goal in the second period.
About the victory against the 'Yotes, Coach Schwartz said, “It was nice to see the guys rebound after Monday’s game (vs Menlo) where we couldn’t find the net. ACI deserves a lot of credit. They pressed us hard and made us hold on to it at the end, even after being down 2-0.”
The T-Birds' next matchup kicks off on Tuesday, September 11, at home versus Corban.
