EUGENE, Ore. -- Andrew Miller scored on a put-back off a last ditch jumper attempt by Peter Nelson, giving Northwest Christian College a 61-60 victory over Northwest University on Saturday night. With the win, Northwest Christian moves to 7-13, 4-6 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference while the Eagles fall to 10-9, 6-4 in the CCC.

After a five-point half-time deficit, the Beacons came out strong in the second half with a 14-4 run, taking a 46-41 lead with 12:45 to play on the heels of back-to-back field goals from Josh Jarrett. The Eagles soon fought back and tied the game at 50-50 on an Eddie Coulson jumper with 4:30 remaining. Northwest took back a brief lead with 3:23 to play when a lay-in from Greg George made it 52-51 in favor of NU. Miller hit a layup on the other side of the floor to give the lead back to NCC.

After trading three-pointers, Miller again gave the Beacons a boost, completing a three-point play for a 59-55 edge with 54 seconds on the clock. On the next possession, Chase Van Cleave got the points right back, hitting a trey. After a fruitless possession for the Beacons, NU had the ball for one last shot attempt. With 6.9 ticks left, Lucas Ashe was fouled under the basket and proceeded to make both free-throw attempts to give the Eagles a 60-59 lead.

Then on the final possession, Nelson drove to the left and stepped just inside the three-point line, where he fired up an off balance attempt that banged off the front of the rim straight into the hands of Miller, who put up the quick, uncontested layup as time ran out. “I wasn’t sure that Peter even got his shot off in time,” said Miller. “I’m just glad I was there for the put-back.”

Miller added, “This win was big for us. Hopefully this gives us the lift we need to come out strong next weekend and begin to fight back towards the .500 mark in conference.”

Miller finished the night with 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Jarrett led all scorers with 19 points, adding seven boards. Jordan Whittenburg was also in double-figures, scoring eleven.

Northwest was led by Coulson, who finished with 15 points, five assists and nine rebounds before fouling out in the final two minutes. Derek Miller added 14 points, hitting four three-pointers for the Eagles.

The Beacons remain home to take on Corban College next Friday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
