Northwest University Hands Southern Oregon an 86-73 Setback
KIRKLAND, WA – Northwest University handled Southern Oregon, 86-73 for a Cascade Conference victory in Kirkland tonight aided by the 27 point, 10 rebound performance by freshman Greg George.
Northwest jumped out early as they scored the first ten points of the game and led 12-6 at the 16:16 mark aided by five SOU turnovers. Southern Oregon would slowly regain their poise and Trenton Fraser’s jumper with 10:12 left in the half would pull the Raiders to within 2 points at 16-14. The Eagles would take the lead once again, 20-16, on Lucas Ashe’s jumper but a basket by SOU’s Matt Cowell narrowed the score to 20-18 with 8:59 left in the first half. Greg George would put NU up 24-20 on his jumper, but SOU would go on a 4-0 run to tie the score at 24 a piece with 5:30 to go. After one more tie, Lucas Ashe would put NU up 31-26 with his 3 pointer at the 3:48 mark and after yet another tie at 33, Northwest would go on a 5-2 run to go into the locker room at halftime with a narrow 38-35 lead.
In the second half, Kory Mahr’s tip in of an offensive rebound would bring SOU within one, 38-37, but NU would go on a 13-0 run to increase their lead to 51-37 with 13:48 left in the game and would stay on top the remainder of the contest. SOU would pull to within 7 points with 1:31 to go but the Eagles would maintain their lead aided by Greg George’s 5 for 5 from the free throw line.
Northwest (11-9, 7-4 CCC) was led by the double-double of freshman post Greg George (Seattle, WA/Lake Washington HS) with 27 points and 10 rebounds including 90% shooting from the free throw line (9 for 10). Junior Eddie Coulson (N. Las Vegas, NV) scored 19 points while teammates Chase Van Cleave (Jr., Puyallup, WA/Rogers HS) and junior Derek Miller (Cheney, WA/Big Bend CC) both contributed 11 each for the Eagles.
Ryon Pool (Jr., Albany, OR) scored 25 points and grabbed 7 rebounds for Southern Oregon (7-14, 3-8 CCC). Sophomore Trenton Fraser (Bandon, OR) dropped in 13 points for the Raiders and Kory Mahr (Jr., Grants Pass, OR) added another 12 points for SOU.
Northwest U. remains at home Saturday night as they host #6 Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon travels south to Olympia to take on The Evergreen State College. Tip off for both games is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
