Steigleman-Miller Show Not Enough against Southern Oregon
SALEM, Ore. – Senior Jessica Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) and freshman Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) combined to score 29 points on 13-for-27 shooting from the field, but it was not enough as Corban's women's basketball team fell to Southern Oregon, 89-65, Saturday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Miller scored a career-high with 14 points, while Steigleman notched her 14th game with 10-or-more points, including three in a row, with a team-high 15 points including 10 in the second half.
Despite allowing Southern Oregon to score the game's opening points, Steigleman single-handedly gave Corban a three-point advantage (5-2) thanks to three-pointer and a lay-up in a span of 26 seconds. Unfortunately for Steigleman and the Warriors, the visiting Red Raiders used a relentless defense and an 8-0 run over a span of 3:07 to take a five-point lead (10-5) and never looked back. Freshman Ashlee Jensen (Yuba City, Calif.) got Corban back within three points (10-7) with a jumper in the paint, but the Red Raiders pushed their lead to as much as 25 points (47-22) over the game's opening twenty minutes when Jackie Speer made a lay-up with 27 ticks left of the first half clock. Southern Oregon watched as Corban junior Margie Lou Correll (Ephrata, Wash.) hit the half's final bucket via a jumper with 16 seconds remaining for the halftime difference of 23 points (47-24).
In the second half, Southern Oregon continued to apply the pressure and built its lead up to as much as 32 points (67-35) with 11:28 remaining in the game via a Chelsey Muri lay-up. Corban could not get any closer than 24 points (89-65) as Jensen knocked down a three-pointer with 40 seconds hanging on the clock for the game's final difference. A relentless Red Raider defense and timely free throw shooting led to Southern Oregon's 10th victory in its past 11 games.
Along with Steigleman and Miller, junior Kailey Bostwick (Medford, Ore.) and sophomore Emily Goette (Aumsville, Ore.) added 8 and 7 points respectively as ninth-year head coach Terry Williams played every player on his roster at least four minutes. Miller and Goette led the Warriors with seven rebounds each, while senior Mandy Peterson (Portland, Ore.) and freshman Rachel Harter (Grass Valley, Calif.) pulled down six and three boards respectively.
Southern Oregon was led by Whitney Scott's game-high 28 points off the bench on 10-for-13 shooting from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc and 4-for-5 from the free throw line. Muri and Speer added 25 and 14 points respectively, while Ashley Baker registered 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Red Raiders.
As a team, Corban shot 24-for-69 (34.8%) from the field including 5-for-13 (38.5%) from behind the three-point line and 12-for-18 (66.7%) from the free throw line. On the other hand, Southern Oregon was 33-for-70 (47.1%) from the field including 7-for-14 (50.0%) from beyond the arc and 16-for-23 (69.6%) from the charity stripe.
With the loss, Corban falls to 6-9 overall, 2-3 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon improves to 13-3 overall, 4-2 in CCC action. The Warriors will return to the floor on Tuesday, January 8th, against the Cavaliers of Concordia beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
