Evergreen Races Past Northwest
KIRKLAND, WA - The Evergreen State College took advantage of 24 Northwest University turnovers to get the 89-71 Cascade Conference victory tonight in Kirkland to tie NU for third with identical 5-2 records.
Northwest U. jumped out to an early lead and found themselves up 18-13 at the 14:10 mark of the first half, but the Geoducks went on a 6-0 run to gain the 19-18 lead by the 12:28 mark as Evergreen’s Nate Menefee lay the ball in after a NU turnover. Greg Peters jumper at the 11:11 mark would put NU back into the lead at 22-21 but a steal by Nick Moore and jumper by Mike Ward would put TESC back into the lead for good, 23-22, with 10:34 to go in the half. With the score 30-29 and Evergreen State in the lead, the Geoducks would go on a 16-0 run and hold the Eagles scoreless for the remaining 6:41 of the first half and take a 46-29 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Eddie Coulson’s jumper with 17:14 remaining would pull NU within ten points at 48-38, but TESC would go on a 12-4 run once again to increase their lead to 60-42 with 12:52 remaining in the contest and the Geoducks biggest lead would come at the 4:00 mark as they pulled ahead, 81-56.
Evergreen State (10-3, 5-2 CCC) was led by Nate Menefee (Lacey, WA) and Nick Moore (Fircrest, WA), both with 17 points a piece. Julio Feliciano (Tacoma, WA) dropped in 14 and David Howard (Dallas, TX) added another 12 for the Geoducks. Evergreen State shot 53% for the game.
Freshman Greg George (Seattle, WA) led Northwest U. (9-7, 5-2 CCC) with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Senior Pat Mattson (Everett, WA) scored 11 points for the Eagles. NU shot 40% from 2-point range and was held to 25% shooting from the 3-point arc.
Both teams hit the road for games in Caldwell, Idaho and LaGrande, Oregon this weekend as they meet The College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon on Friday and Saturday night. NU plays C of I on Friday while TESC takes on EOU and the teams switch opponents on Saturday night.
