Corban Duo Nets Match-High in Kills in Win Over Northwest Christian
BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Senior Rashelle Davenport (Kalama, Wash.) and freshman Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.) registered a match-high tying 10 kills each, as Corban's women's volleyball team recorded a victory over Northwest Christian, 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-21), Friday night inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Having picked up a much-needed victory earlier this week against conference rival Concordia, Corban knew that a win over the visiting Beacons would push them into the driver's seat in the overall playoff picture.
In the opening set, Corban jumped out to a 17-11 lead following a kill by Land before Northwest Christian got as close as two points (22-20) via a Brooke Stribling kill. Another Land kill and a pair of NCU hitting errors led to the Warriors grabbing the opening set (25-20) and an early lead in the overall set total.
In the second set, the Warriors rode the serving arm of junior Andrea Potloff (Aumsville, Ore.) to an early six-point lead (7-1). Northwest Christian would fight back to within a mere point (12-11) via a 10-4 run before Potloff would return to the service line and lead the Warriors on a 9-0 run that would seal the middle set. A kill by NCU's Cassie Bishop would snap Corban's run and be the Beacons final point of the set, as the Warriors got kills from senior Rachel Gowen (Oregon City, Ore.), sophomore Teri Braun (Dallas, Ore.), and junior Amy Thompson (Oregon City, Ore.) to close out the second set (25-12) heading into the break.
In the third and final set, Corban grabbed an early two-point advantage (5-3) following a kill by Davenport before Northwest Christian used a 7-3 run to snag a two-point lead (10-8) with Bishop getting a kill to close out the run. Both teams would battle back and forth until the score was tied at 18-all, as the Warriors got a pair of kills from both Gowen and Davenport, along with a kill by Land, in the midst of a 7-3 run to close out the third set (25-21) and the match in a three-set sweep.
Along with Davenport and Land, Gowen and fellow senior Chelsea Reeher (Powell Butte, Ore.) added 8 and 7 kills respectively. Thompson and freshman Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) combined to run the Warriors' offense by handing out a combined 30 assists, as Thompson registered a team-high 21. Reeher and Davenport anchored Corban's back line with 9 and 7 digs respectively, while Gowen controlled the net with a team-high three blocks.
Northwest Christian was led by Bishop's match-high tying 10 kills to go along with a match-high four blocks. Bishop was aided by Stribling and Cotie Howard, who added 9 and 4 kills respectively. Whitney Hoff handed out a match-high 22 assists for the Beacons, while Stribling also aided the Beacons' efforts with a match-high 12 digs.
With the victory, Corban moves to 9-8 overall, including 7-5 in conference play. Meanwhile, Northwest Christian falls to 8-11 overall, 2-9 in conference action. The Warriors return to the court on Friday, October 17th, when they travel north to Kirkland, Washington to a match-up against the Eagles of Northwest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
