OT Goal Sends SOU to 3-1
ASHLAND, Ore. - Katie Griffith’s goal in the second overtime gave Southern Oregon a 1-0 victory over Evergreen State today at University Field in Ashland.
The victory improved the Raiders to 5-7 overall and 3-1 in Cascade Conference play. The 3-1 start is the best conference start for the Raiders since the 2003 SOU squad started off conference action 7-1. Evergreen State fell to 2-9-1 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
The Raiders host Northwest Saturday at Noon.
“It was a well-deserved victory,” SOU head coach Jon Clement said. “Our tempo was very good, I thought our ideas in the final part of the field weren’t creative enough. But we persevered incredibly well and I’m very proud of the entire team.”
SOU controlled the action throughout the matchup played under cold and windy conditions.
As a team, finished with 32 shots and 18 shots on goal.
But it wasn’t until the second overtime that one finally made it in the goal.
Following a corner kick by SOU’s Kelly Cates, the Raiders kept the ball alive and Auika Muragin kicked it out to Griffith who buried the shot from seven yards out at the 103:27 mark in the match.
“First it was a great piece of technical precision by Kristen Delsigne to earn us the corner kick,” Clement said. “Then it was a very aware pass from Auika and just a fantastic strike by Katie.”
Griffith, Muragin, Chelsie O’Neill, Stefani Vert, Denise Powell and Chennin Young all finished with two shots on goal for the Raiders, while Chelsey Muri led the team with three shots on goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Jessica Kuehlwien had six saves on the day.
