Corban's Walter Nets Two Goals in Victory Over Eastern Oregon
BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Junior Marissa Walter (Elk Grove, Calif.) scored a pair of goals within the first five minutes of each half, as Corban's women's soccer team captured a 4-0 victory over the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon Friday at Warrior Field to set-up Saturday's showdown with The College of Idaho.
The Corban’s offense started strong, as the Warrior pressure set up Walter’s tap-in goal in the fifth minute to seize the early lead. Junior Jessica Matthews (Yelm, Wash.) and freshman Rachel Cole (San Ramon, Calif.) combined on a combo assist for the score, as Corban out-shot the Mountaineers by four (5-1) to hold a one-goal advantage at halftime.
Corban began the second half quickly, as Walter put away her second goal of the game with a 15-yard shot off an assist from freshman Brittney Bowman (Shelton, Wash.) in the 50th minute to extend the Warrior lead.
The onslaught continued, as freshman Natalie Haddix (Santa Rosa, Calif.) scored her fifth goal of the season on a through ball from Bowman in the 76th minute. Freshman Amanda Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) capped the afternoon’s scoring with an unassisted goal from 18 yards in the 79th minute, as Corban held Eastern Oregon scoreless despite the Mountaineers out-shooting the Warriors by two (7-5) in the final 45 minutes.
With her two assists in the game, Bowman now has seven goals and seven assists this season. Her 21 points are the most by a Warrior since 2005, when Sarah Officer tallied 25 points during her final season at Corban. Mendenhall’s late-game goal gives her five goals to go along with five assists for a total of 15 points this season.
Corban’s senior goalkeeper Karyn Allen (Merlin, Ore.) tallied one save to earn her fourth shutout of the season. Meanwhile, EOU’s Kalah Minter snagged three saves in a complete-game effort between the pipes.
