Thunderbirds Down Tech, Secure Playoff Spot
BOX SCORE
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Cascade College men's soccer team secured their first post-season berth since 2001 with a hard fought 2-0 win over Oregon Tech today at Williams & Smith Field.
Freshman defender Devin Chaney got the Thunderbirds on the board early with a 25 yard blast at the 9:36 mark after pushing forward from his backfield spot. The visiting Owls held the line the rest of the half, and Cascade went in at the break with a 1-0 lead.
The hosts had more trouble cracking the OIT defense in the second period, but managed to break through with 5:30 left on the clock on a Fernando Montiel goal thanks to nicely placed Juan Manzanarez service.
"Oregon Tech plays with a lot of heart, and we really had to work for our opportunities," said T-Bird coach Mike Alfers. "Getting to host a playoff game is a real boost for our program, and the guys deserve it for their effort this season."
The Thunderbirds sit alone in 2nd place in the CCC South Division with a 6-4-0 record with two more conference games to play. Oregon Tech drops to 3-11-0 overall and 3-7-0 in CCC play.
