Early Goal Propels Cavs to Win Over Raiders
BEAVERTON, Ore.—Punching in her first goal of the season, Jenna Peterson put Concordia on top early en route to a 3-0 win over Southern Oregon Saturday night at the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation Complex.
With the win, Concordia improved to 14-0-1 on the year and a perfect 7-0-0 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference while SOU dropped to 7-8-0 on the year and 5-2-0 in the CCC.
Peterson, a freshman defender, after following through on action deep in the Raiders box, tapped a five-yard shot through the fingertips of SOU goalkeeper Jessica Kuehlwein to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead in the 2nd minute of play.
The Raiders would hold CU out of the net for the remainder of the period despite to keep the game within a single score, but in the opening stages of the second period Kaitlyn Tebbs doubled the Concordia lead with a successful 16-yard boot after being played to by teammate Justine Pronovost from the right side of the pitch.
Collecting her CCC-leading 15th goal of the year, Jessica Ramback would give the Cavs its final score with a header over the charging Kuehlwein in the 72nd minute.
Concordia outshot the Raiders 18-to-3 and finished with a 6-to-0 advantage in corner kicks.
“Sometimes you get a false sense of security with early goals. We created really great chances after that score but we needed more commitment inside the box from our players,” Concordia head coach Grant Landy said.
Concordia returns to action next weekend when it travels to The College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon.
“This roadtrip is always one of the more difficult ones on the schedule,” Landy said. “We just have to keep it rolling and not lose focus.”
