Reimer Leads Yotes Past Cavaliers
PORTLAND, Ore.—Led by a match-high 15 kills from sophomore Naomi Reimer, The College of Idaho swept Concordia 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-17) in Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball action on Saturday night.
With the win, C of I improved to 17-7 overall and remained atop the CCC standings with a 14-2 mark in conference contests. Concordia dropped to 14-11 overall and 10-6 in league play and are currently fifth in the league standings.
The Yotes managed to hold the Cavs without any extended rallies throughout the three sets, never allowing Concordia to score more than four straight points.
“Overall we played at a good level,” Concordia head coach Christopher Duenow said. “We weren’t able to put together runs which is what you have to do against quality teams. They are the most physical team in the conference and can bring a lot of different weapons to the court.”
After a 16-16 tie in the opening stanza, kills by Megan Spinks and Reimer pushed the Yotes to a 25-18 win to take the early 1-0 lead.
The Yotes jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the second before the Cavs returning to pull within two points on consecutive kills by Jamie Richards, Mariana Toscano and Clair Thiel. C of I returned it back to a five-point margin with Reimer kill for a 15-10 score and held on for the 25-20 victory to take a commanding 2-0 advantage.
In the third, the Yotes once again took a 10-5 lead, before five of the next six points by Concordia trimmed the deficit to a single score at 11-10. An ace by Marcella Hernandez would give the visiting club a seven-point lead with the score 21-14 before taking the set with a match-ending kill by Spinks.
“They (C of I) put together a solid team effort and applied the most consistent pressure. They didn’t allow us to get into a rhythm,” Duenow said.
C of I hot .202 collectively while holding the Cavs to a .070 attack rate. Along with 15 kills, Reimer also added 15 assists, five digs and an ace in the all-around effort. Madie Machurek led the Yotes with 22 assists while Whitney Owen tallied a match-high 17 digs.
Lindsey Fryer paced the Cavs with nine kills in 22 attempts. Skyler Kamaka notched a match-high 28 assists and Kim Lindow led the team with 14 digs.
Concordia returns to action on Oct. 31 when they travel across town to face Cascade College at 7 p.m. The College of Idaho will host Northwest University in Caldwell, Idaho on Oct. 31.
