T-Bird Men Stay Focused, Defeat Corban 2-0
BOX SCORE
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Cascade College men's soccer team put aside the distractions of the past few days and put forth a spirited effort in a 2-0 win over Corban College today at Williams & Smith Field.
With the news that their college would be closing at the end of the year still fresh in their minds, the Thunderbirds looked sharp for most of the match.
"It has been a rough 24 hours," said coach Mike Alfers. "These guys have worked so hard to make this program into a playoff contender. A few of these guys were part of the first class that really started the rebuilding process, so it hurts, no question. But we realize that we have been blessed with a tremendous opportunity, and we sure hope to make a deep run in the payoffs and finish the last year at Cascade strong."
Corban came out firing in the first five minutes, crossing several dangerous balls and testing T-Bird keeper Efrain Vargas. Cascade settled in from there and finished with a 13-6 shot advantage for the game.
Alex Cioara knocked in his first career goal with 9 minutes remaining in the first half to give Cascade the edge at the break. Keeping up the pressure, Fernando Montiel rifled in his 7th goal of the season with a 20 yard strike at the 78:24 mark to give the T-Birds the insurance score.
"It was a much needed result for the guys," said Alfers. "We played with purpose, and that is very encouraging heading into the playoff game Saturday."
Cascade will host Northwest University on Saturday, November 1st at Williams & Smith Field, hoping to extend their final season by at least one more game. Cascade defeated NU 1-0 earlier in the season.
