LA GRANDE, Ore. - The Mounties started the season with a victory against Walla Walla University. The Mounties got off to a great start with a pull up jumper within seconds of the tipoff. It didn't stop there, the Mounties continued to go on a 17-0 run.
The first half consisted of pushing the ball to create many fast break opportunities. The Mounties capitalized on each possession, ending the first half with a score of 53-23. EOU came out the second half with the same energy and intensity to build the lead, finishing 104-51. "We did a great job setting the tempo early and sticking to our game plan of what we needed to improve on, instead of worrying about the score," noted Head Coach Anji Weissenfluh.
Each member of the Mountaineer team was able to contribute and put points on the board. Five players scored double figures.
Sophomore Alyssa Garro had a spectacular performance, shooting 8 for 10 from the field racking a game-high 17 points. "Alyssa Garro had the best game of her Eastern career, and it was fed off hard work," noted Weissenfluh.
Standout freshman Sasha Valdez contributed 14 points, teammate Tana Stickney added 11, and Brianna Smith and Whitney Hughes each added 10. "We ran the floor really well, and worked together as a team," noted Garro on tonight's performance.
