Bowles Invite: SOU Men 2nd, C of I Women 7th

SALEM, Ore. -- The Southern Oregon men's cross country team finished second at Willamette's Charles Bowles Invitational here Saturday morning.
NCAA Division II power Chico State won the men's race with 33 points, while the NAIA's 11th-ranked Raiders finished second with 126 points. Lewis-Clark State (20th-ranked in the NAIA) finished third with 143 points, followed by ninth-ranked Concordia at 158 and 24th-ranked College of Idaho at 163. Other CCC teams included in the men's team scoring were Eastern Oregon (17th), Evergreen (20th), Corban (21st), Warner Pacific (22nd), Oregon Tech (23rd), Cascade (26th) and Northwest Christian (28th).
Ninteenth-ranked College of Idaho led all CCC and NAIA entrants on the women's side, finishing seventh overall. Stephanie Helm led the way for the Yotes, placing fourth overall in a time of 17:57.60 over the 5K course. Chico State also won the women's team title, finishing ahead of Lewis-Clark State, Claremont-Mudd, Whitman, Willamette, Whitworth and College of Idaho. Other CCC teams in the women's scoring included Evergreen (13th), Concordia (15th), Corban (17th), Oregon Tech (20th), Eastern Oregon (21st), Cascade (25th) and Warner Pacific (28th).
With the Southern Oregon men finishing ahead of Concordia, it marked the second straight race that the Raiders men have upset a higher ranked NAIA opponent. In the season-opening Sudodger Invitational Sept. 20, the Raiders upset third-ranked Simon Fraser to claim the team title.
At Willamette, Cameron Kreuz and Joe Rath led the Raiders. Kreuz finished 19th in a time of 25:30.02, while Rath was right behind him in 20th at 25:34.61. David Laney finished third for the Raiders with a 28th place finish in 25:43.63 and Anthony Monteleone finished 32nd in 25:50.33. Concordia had three runners among the top 12 in the men's race, with Eric Burck finishing second, Martin Romero-Clark sixth, and Charles Cummings 11th.
Ryan Gelfi rounded out the point scorers for SOU, finishing 37th in 25:59.39.
Kristen Juveland led the SOU women with a 152nd place finish and a time of 20:20.97. Whitney Riehl finished the race in 22:05.31, good enough for 245th place.
