Concordia's Samantha Smith notched two assists in the 11-1 win against Evergreen State on Saturday.
Cavaliers Rout Geoducks 11-1; 27-Match CCC Shutout Streak Snapped
PORTLAND, Ore.– With seven different players breaking through for scores and junior forward Jessica Ramback posting the team’s first hat trick of the season, the Concordia women’s soccer team powered past Evergreen State 11-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action on Saturday.
With the result, the fifth-ranked Concordia Cavaliers improved to 11-0-1 on the year and 5-0-0 in CCC play. Evergreen dropped to 2-8-1 overall and 1-4-0 in league contests.
In the 3rd minute, Justine Pronovost provided a glimpse of things to come as a quick-strike with the help of passes by Samantha Smith and Caitlin Verhofstadt, led to the early 1-0 lead. The Cavs would produce four additional goals in the first period, including a pair by Ramback in a two-minute span, to push its lead to 5-0 at the half.
The Cavaliers would make it a 10-0 contest before the Geoducks broke the shutout in the 83rd minute with a Brianna Speed burst on the right side. From just inside the 18-yard box, Speed fired a shot from left to right and off the fingertips of Cavalier goalkeeper Adrienne Hagen.
The goal would halt a 629-minute scoreless streak posted by the Cavalier defense. After allowing a score against Puget Sound in the 83rd minute on Sept. 7, Concordia has reeled off six straight shutouts.
The goal also snapped a long scoreless streak against CCC opponents in regular- season play as CU had not allowed a score since Oct. 7, 2005, a span that stretched 27 matches.
"We created some great chances today and did a good job converting on those chances,” Concordia head coach Grant Landy said.” It was a good win with a lot of contributions from the entire team. We will move forward and get ready for our road trip to Simon Fraser next weekend."
In its last non-conference match of the season, Concordia will travel to Burnaby, B.C. for a match against No. 11 Simon Fraser on Oct. 11. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. The Clan will enter the match with an 8-2-0 record.
