Corban Falls to Wolves of WOU in Final Exhibition Game

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Junior Paul Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) registered a game-high 21 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field, but Corban's men's basketball team dropped its final exhibition game of the season, 103-72, to the Wolves of Western Oregon Tuesday evening inside the New PE Building.
Playing close by Corban's Salem-based campus for the first time this season, the Warriors hung with its NCAA Division II opponent over the opening six-plus minutes as freshman Winston Mueller (Klamath Falls, Ore.) knotted the score at 16-all via a lay-up with 13:02 showing on the first half clock.
Over the next 12-plus minutes, Western Oregon would use a 29-18 run to grab its largest lead of the opening twenty minutes (45-34) with just over one minute remaining. Freshman Jake Mauermann (Clackamas, Ore.) pulled the Warriors within 10 points (45-35) at halftime via a free throw with 34 ticks remaining on the clock.
In the opening two minutes of the second half, the Martin brothers -- Paul and sophomore Clay Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) -- would cut the host Wolves' lead to single digits (47-40) via a jumper and three-point bucket with 18:49 remaining in the game. Two-and-a-half minutes later, Paul Martin would once again bring the Warriors within single digits (56-47) via a jumper with 16:04 on the clock.
Western Oregon would gradually extend its lead to as much as 32 points (95-63) via a 39-16 run over a span of 11 minutes and 41 seconds. Corban would then use a 7-0 run that was highlighted by four straight free throws from junior Ben Potloff (Keizer, Ore.) to pull the Warriors within 25 points (95-70) with just over three minutes remaining. The host Wolves would close the game via an 8-2 run for the final margin of 103-72.
Besides Martin's team-high point effort, Clay Martin and Potloff added 18 and 11 points respectively. Meanwhile, sophomore Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.) pulled down a team-high seven rebounds (four offensive) to go along with Paul Martin and sophomore Bryan Martin's (Salem, Ore.) six-rebound effort each.
Western Oregon was led by Blair Wheadon and Matt Schmidt's 17-point performance each, while three other Wolves -- Kyle Long, Sam Kelly, and North Salem graduate Travis Kuhns -- added 16, 15, and 13 points respectively. Kuhns pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and handed out a game-high five assists for WOU.
Corban shot 23-for-65 (35.4%) from the field, while registering a 22-for-34 (64.7%) performance from the free throw line and 4-for-21 (19.0%) from beyond the three-point line. On the other hand, Western Oregon shot 36-for-63 (57.1%) from the field for the game, including a 21-for-32 (65.6%) clip in the second half.
Corban will begin its official 2008-09 regular season on Saturday, November 15th, against the Pioneers of Lewis & Clark beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Portland.
