CCC Players of the Week Named in Basketball, Volleyball
The following Cascade Collegiate Conference student-athletes were recognized as conference Players of the Week in their respective sports for the period Nov. 10-16.
Men’s Basketball
Northwest Christian senior guard Jordan Whittenburg (Walnut Creek, Calif.) was named the Most Valuable Player of the William Jessup Invitational after hitting a pair of game-winning shots to lead the Beacons to the tournament title. The 6-3 Whittenburg hit a jumper with six seconds left on Friday to lift NCU to a 75-73 win over William Jessup, then nailed a 12-foot buzzer beater the following day to give the Beacons a 72-70 win over The Master’s College. In two games, Whittenburg scored 22 points and hit 5 of 10 3-point field goal attempts. Women’s Basketball
College of Idaho senior guard ShaNae Horner (West Jordan, Utah) registered back-to-back career highs, including 23 points in an upset of No. 13-ranked Cal Baptist, as the Yotes went 3-0 and won the Westminster Tournament title. Horner also had 25 points against Northern New Mexico and 12 against Holy Names University. Other nominees: Lisa Busch, Oregon Tech; Rhiannon Dickison, Southern Oregon; Emily Gray, Northwest Christian; Haley Roth, Concordia.
Volleyball
Player – College of Idaho freshman Megan Spinks (Manteca, Calif.) had 20 kills as the Yotes defeated Eastern Oregon and Southern Oregon to win the 2008 Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament championship. Spinks had 10 kills in a 3-1 win over EOU, then followed with a team-high 10 kills in a 3-0 victory over Southern Oregon. Other nominees: Grace Deboodt, Eastern Oregon; Leanne Stennett, Southern Oregon.
Libero – College of Idaho sophomore Whitney Owen (Caldwell, Idaho) had 31 digs in helping lead the Yotes to the 2008 CCC tournament title. Owen had 25 digs in a 3-1 win over Eastern Oregon and added six digs in a 3-0 win over Southern Oregon. Other nominees: Sareena Simpson, Eastern Oregon.
Setter – Southern Oregon junior Lindsey Stone (Ashland, Ore.) totaled 84 assists in two matches in the CCC’s postseason tournament. Stone had 60 assists in a 3-2 win over Oregon Tech and added 24 in the CCC tournament finale vs. eventual champion
College of Idaho. Other nominees: Madie Machurek, College of Idaho.
