Northwest Comes Back to Defeat George Fox

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University came back from a 12 point halftime deficit to defeat George Fox U., 72-64, tonight in non-conference play.

George Fox took an early 11-6 lead as Jack Martin buried a 3 point shot with 16 minutes to go in the first half. Northwest would come back to tie the game at 11 on a basket and free throw by Jason Waltman with 14:29 to go, but another Jack Martin 3 pointer would put the Bruins up 19-13 with 13:10 left in the half. With the score 23-22 and 11:12 remaining, George Fox would out score NU 19-6 to take a 41-29 lead into the locker room.

In the second half Northwest would chip away at the George Fox lead and freshman guard Rich Skillman’s 3-pointer at the 15:34 mark would cut the Bruins’ lead to 47-40. Northwest’s bench would come into the game and contribute to the come back. Sophomore Greg Peters’ jumper at the 13:46 mark would pull the Eagles to within 5 at 47-42. Two free throws by the frosh Skillman would cut the GFU lead to 47-44 and then sophomore forward Lucas Ashe’s 3-pointer with 12:22 left in the game would tie the score at 47-all. GFU’s Evan Atwater would put the Bruins back into the lead 49-47, but Eddie Coulson would tie it up once again at 49 with his jumper. Sophomore Greg Peter’s offensive rebound and put back would put the Eagles into the lead for good, 54-51, with 9:26 left on the clock. Lucas Ashe would score five straight points on a jumper and 3-pointer to put NU up 61-53 as the Eagles would hold on for the victory.


Senior guard Eddie Coulson (N. Las Vegas, Nev.) led Northwest U.  (2-3) with 17 points and 4 steals while Lucas Ashe (Soph., Spokane, Wash.) would drop in 13 and Rich Skillman (Everson, Wash.) would score 12 for the Eagles. 6-6 freshman forward Jason Waltman (Monroe, Wash.) pulled down a team high 10 rebounds.

George Fox was led by Joe Ahn who finished with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Evan Atwater scored 12 points and teammate Alex Stockner contributed 11 points on the night. Travis Toedtemeier grabbed a game high 11 rebounds for the Bruins as they out rebounded BU 46 to 36 including 16 offensive rebounds.

Northwest U. remains at home to host Pacific University on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. in Kirkland.
