NEWBERG, Ore.— Aided by an 11-point run in the middle of the first period, the Concordia men’s basketball team snagged a 72-58 road win at George Fox on Saturday at the Wheeler Sports Center.

With the result, Concordia moved to 3-1 on the year while George Fox dropped to 0-3.

Already up by six points thanks to six different scorers in the first 10 minutes of play, Concordia pushed the lead to a 17-point gap with 11 unanswered before Bruins’ Bryan O’Connell stopped the CU attack with a successful jumper with 5:24 remaining in the first period.

A Dustin Hiebert three would give the Cavs an 18-point lead with 4:22 left but the bruins would generate the period’s last six points to cut the margin to a dozen points with the score 38-26 at the half.

Matt Ochs, Sergio Rosario and Steven Vaughan accounted for CU’s first 13 points in the second half as the Cavs began the second session with a 17-6 run to take a 23-point lead with just over 12 minutes remaining.

George Fox would cut the deficit to 10 points via a Jack Martin free throw with 4:39 remaining, but the lead would prove to be safe for the Cavs after holding the Bruins to 29 percent shooting from the floor in the second half.

Converting from 4-of-6 six attempts from beyond the three-point arc, Rosario led the Cavs with 14 points. Dustin Hiebert and Vaughan each posted a dozen points in the winning effort. Vaughan also corralled a team-high seven rebounds.

Martin paced the Bruins with 17 points while O’Connell and Travis Toedtemeier shared a game-high with nine rebounds each.

Concordia returns to the floor on Nov. 25 when it travels to Linfield College. Opening tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in McMinnvile, Ore.
