Corban's Logan Helps Lead Warriors to Upset Win Over Point Loma
BOX SCORE
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Sophomore Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.) scored a team-high 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field and grabbed six rebounds in helping lead Corban's men's basketball team to an upset win over Point Loma Nazarene, 75-72, inside Golden Gymnasium on Thanksgiving night.
After catching an early morning flight from Portland to San Diego and showing up less than an hour before game time, Corban picked up its second victory of the season and first against an NAIA Division I opponent since defeating Fresno Pacific, 85-78 in overtime, during the 2004-05 season.
The Warriors fell behind earlier (9-2) within the game's opening three minutes before the host Sea Lions extended their lead to as much as eight points (16-8) with 15:05 remaining in the opening half. Corban then used an 8-0 run to knot the game at 16-all following back-to-back free throws by junior Paul Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) with 11:04 showing on the first half clock. Corban would take its first lead (21-20) with 7:59 remaining in the opening half when freshman Erik Cronrath (Battle Ground, Wash.) hit a free throw. Twenty-six seconds later, Cronrath would hand the Warriors their largest lead of the opening twenty minutes (23-20) via a lay-up with 7:33 on the clock. Both teams would battle over the next six-plus minutes, as the score was tied for the sixth and final time of the first half (30-30) following a lay-in by Martin. Point Loma would close the half on a 5-1 run that was highlighted by Dean Colbray's half-closing three-pointer with 31 seconds remaining that gave the Sea Lions a four-point half time advantage (35-31).
In the opening two-plus minutes of the second half, Point Loma would push its lead to double figures (43-33) following a fast break lay-in by Noble'D Shelton with 17:18 remaining in the game. The host Sea Lions would continue to increase its lead going up by a game-high 11 points (51-40) with 13:46 on the clock following a Shelton jumper. Over the next seven-plus minutes, Corban used a 22-11 run to grab its first lead of the final half (62-61) following a lay-up in the paint by Logan off an pretty assist by senior Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) with 6:08 on the clock. The game-changing moments came over the next 68 seconds, as Point Loma's Curtis Carlson missed four straight free throws, as the score remained the same. Both teams would battle over the next 99 seconds en route to the score being tied at 66-all following back-to-back free throws by Shelton with just over three minutes showing on the game clock. Another pair of free throws by PLNU's Shelton would hand the host team its final lead of the game (68-66) before junior Ben Potloff (Keizer, Ore.) knotted the game for the eighth and final time at 68-68 via a lay-in with 97 seconds remaining in the game. Potloff would complete a conventional three-point play via a free throw that would give the Warriors the lead for good (69-68) before sophomore Clay Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) hit back-to-back free throws sandwiched around a PLNU timeout with 58 seconds left in the game that gave Corban a three-point lead (71-68). Despite a Colbray jumper with 41 ticks left that brought the Sea Lions back within a single point (71-70), Paul Martin and Logan hit four straight free throws that gave Corban its largest lead of the second half (75-70) with 15 seconds left. Colbray hit a jumper with two ticks left to pull the Sea Lions back with a single bucket before Point Loma forced a turnover with two-tenths of a second showing on the game clock. Colbray's depression three-pointer at the buzzer hit the front of the rim therefore giving the Warriors an upset victory by the final margin of three points (75-72) to open its two-game Southern California road trip.
Along with Logan’s team-leading point and rebounding performances, three other Warriors -- Paul Martin, Clay Martin, and Potloff -- scored in double figures registering 15, 13, and 12 points respectively. Cronrath, Douglas, and sophomore Bryan Martin (Salem, Ore.) added 9, 6, and 3 points respectively rounding out the Warriors' scoring to go along with Douglas' team-high tying six rebounds.
Point Loma Nazarene was led by Colbray's game-high 18 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field, while Carlson, Shelton, and Craig Austin added 16, 14, and 10 points respectively. Austin pulled down a game-high seven rebounds for the Sea Lions, while Shelton, Colbray, and Carlson grabbed six rebounds each for PLNU.
As a team, the Warriors shot 28-for-55 (50.9%) from the field to go along with a 5-for-13 (38.5%) showing from long distance and a 14-for-19 (73.7%) performance at the free throw line that included a perfect 9-for-9 in the second half. On the other hand, Point Loma was 30-for-66 (45.5%) from the floor to go along with a 1-for-15 (6.7%) showing from beyond the arc and an 11-for-17 (64.7%) performance at the charity stripe.
