Long-Distance Shooting Sparks Cavaliers Win
TACOMA, Wash.—Behind an 8-for-10 performance beyond the three-point arc, Concordia defeated Wartburg (Iowa) 78-69 in women’s basketball action at the second annual Pacific Northwest Lutheran Invitational basketball tournament held at Pacific Lutheran on Friday at the Olson Auditorium.
With the win, Concordia improved to 4-1 on the season while Wartburg dropped to 2-2.
Angela Gimeno led the Cavaliers with 20 points off a 5-for-8 shooting performance which included 4-for-4 from three-point territory and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
Rachel Scarpelli was also perfect from behind the arc, going 3-for-3 en route to 11 points. Danielle Clauson also recorded 11 points and Haley Roth chipped in with 10 points as seven Cavaliers scored at least six points in the win.
After 17 first-period points, including 12 of Wartburg’s first 22 points, Samantha Harrington was limited to seven in the second half for a game-high 24 points. Harrington finished 8-of-18 from the floor, including knocking down 4-of-11 three-point attempts.
A Harrington jumper with 6:42 remaining in the first period gave the Knights its largest lead of the game; an eight-point spread with the score 29-21.
A few minutes later, Angela Gimeno would respond with back-to-back threes to give Concordia a 31-29 lead en route to a 35-32 lead at he half.
Leah Riley would connect on a jumper out of the gate in the second period to cut the lead to a single point, but the Cavs would eventually generate a double-digit advantage via five straight points from Gimeno with under seven minutes remaining.
Concordia’s Sarah Eischen led the floor with seven rebounds. Along with Harrington, Sharese Van Sloten (12) and Riley (11) reached double digits in the scoring column for the Knights.
The Cavaliers will face Finlandia (Mich.) on Saturday with an opening tip scheduled for 2 p.m.
