Cavaliers Win Battle of Concordias, 85-70
PARKLAND, Wash.–Concordia (Ore.) scored 23 unanswered points in the final 6:30 of the first half on the way to a 85-70 men’s basketball victory over Concordia-Moorhead at the Pacific Northwest Lutheran Invitational at Pacific Lutheran University’s Olson Auditorium.
The Cavaliers (6-1) trailed 22-17 after Moorhead’s Karl Olson hit a free throw with 6:47 to play in the opening period. With Steven Vaughan doing most of the damage on the offensive end, the Cavalier defense put the clamps on the Cobbers (3-2), who missed 10 straight shots while turning the ball over four times.
Sergio Rosario got the 23-0 run started with a three-point play and Desmond Meray followed with a jumper to tie the game at 22-22 with 5:43 left in the half. Vaughan scored 10 points over the next four minutes, and Rosario capped the run, hitting a jumper with five seconds on the clock.
Erik Lien opened the second half with a pair of free throws for the Cobbers, but the Cavaliers built up a 22-point lead before settling for the 15-point victory.
Vaughan led the Cavaliers with 23 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field and 7-for-7 shooting from the charity stripe. Sergio Rosario added 11 and Jourdan Sweeney contributed with nine points for the Cavaliers.
John Fraase and Ryan Hagemeyer each scored 14 points to lead the Cobbers.
Concordia returns to action Nov. 5 when it hosts Northwest University to open Cascade Collegiate Conference action. The men’s game is set for 7:30 p.m. in the Cavalier Gymnasium.
