Players of Week Named in Soccer, Volleyball
The following Cascade Collegiate Conference student-athletes were recognized as conference Players of the Week in their respective sports for the period Oct. 27-Nov. 2.
Men’s Soccer
Offensive – Cascade sophomore forward Fernando Montiel (Vancouver, Wash.) had one goal and an assist in the T-Birds’ regular season finale vs. Corban, then had a crucial goal in their CCC quarterfinal match vs. Northwest. Montiel’s second-half goal vs. NU erased a 1-0 deficit and paved the way for the Thunderbirds to advance to the CCC semifinals on penalty kicks.

Defensive – Cascade junior goalkeeper Efrain Vargas (Carpinteria, Calif.) played a key role in a pair of victories. He recorded five saves in a 1-1 tie in the CCC quarterfinals against Northwest (the Thunderbirds advanced to the next round on penalty kicks) and had three saves in the regular season finale vs. Corban. The only goal he allowed was an own goal vs. Northwest.
Women’s Soccer
Offensive –Concordia senior forward Shea Miller (Azalea, Ore.) tied a CCC single-game high with four goals and two assists for 10 points in an 8-0 win over Northwest Christian. For the season, Miller is tied for the CCC lead with 40 points and is second in the CCC in goals (16).

Defensive – Southern Oregon freshman goalkeeper Jessica Kuehlwien (Oregon City, Ore.) helped the Raiders to a 1-1 record, including SOU’s first-ever playoff victory. Kuehlwien had eight saves in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Northwest in the CCC quarterfinals. Earlier in the week, she had seven saves in a game vs. Oregon Tech.
Volleyball
Player – Cascade junior Natalie Forgan (Long Beach, Calif.) totaled 36 kills and four service aces to help the Thunderbirds to a split of their two CCC matches. In a 3-1 win over CCC tournament-bound Corban, Forgan had 19 kills, six digs and four assist-blocks. One night earlier, in a close 3-2 loss to tournament-bound Concordia, she had 17 kills, seven digs and three service aces.

Libero – Southern Oregon sophomore Maggie Rivers (Salem, Ore.) had 39 digs and three service aces as the Raiders posted a pair of conference victories. Rivers had 18 digs in a key 3-2 win over Oregon Tech on Tuesday, then followed with 21 digs and a pair of aces in a 3-0 win over Northwest Christian.
Other nominees: Rebecca Franke, Corban; Kim Lindow, Concordia; Whitney Owen, College of Idaho; Sareena Simpson, Eastern Oregon.
Setter – Southern Oregon junior Lindsey Stone (Ashland, Ore.) totaled 91 assists – including 57 in a crucial 3-2 victory over Oregon Tech – as the Raiders won a pair of league matches. Stone, who earned the honor for the sixth time, also had 34 assists in a 3-0 win over Northwest Christian.
