SEATTLE, Wash. – After two days of heavy rain in the Seattle area, the weather finally broke into partial sunshine for the start of the 2008 Cascade Conference Cross Country Championships in West Seattle’s  Lincoln Park and the women’s 5k run this morning
.
The College of Idaho captured its first women’s team title and C of I’s Stephanie Helm finished first, eleven seconds ahead of the field. With one of the strongest conferences in the country, two nationally ranked teams in No. 12 College of Idaho and No. 21 Concordia, and one receiving votes (Evergreen State College), the women’s field proved to be a strong one.

The rain made the course a bit soggy and muddy in spots but the top portion of the course seemed to have good footing for the runners. College of Idaho’s Stephanie Helm broke out to the early lead which she held for the entire race. As the race wound through the fall colors and down near the Puget Sound, the field began to settle in.
