Northwest U. Defeats George Fox for 7th Straight
NEWBERG, Ore. - The Eagle men won their seventh straight contest as they defeated George Fox U. 76-64 in the Wheeler Sports Center Saturday night.
George Fox took their only lead of the game came at the 18:49 mark as Jack Martin hit a 3-pointer to put the Bruins up 3-0, but an 8-2 run by the Eagles would give them the lead for good (8-5) on Greg George's lay up with 17:03 left in the half. GFU would go on a 6-run capped by Evan Atwater's trey to pull the Bruins to within three (25-22) with 5:14 left in the half. But the Eagles answered with a 16-4 run as junior guard Blake Solomon scored the final 5 points of the half on a steal and lay-up and sank a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 7 seconds left on the clock as NU took a 41-26 lead at the break.
In the second half, NU would increase their lead to 17 (47-30) points on Greg Peters' four consecutive points on a jumper and an offensive rebound and put back. The Eagles would withstand the Bruins' pressure and maintain a 10 to 12 cushion to close out the game.
Three Eagles (8-3, 2-0) registered double figures on the night and were led by senior Eddie Coulson's (N. Las Vegas, Nev.) 19 points. Junior Blake Solomon (Kent, Wash.) dropped in 17 points and added 6 assists while sophomore forward Greg George (Seattle, Wash.) contributed 15 points. Senior Greg Spurgetis (Spokane, Wash.) contributed 9 points and 6 rebounds and sophomore Greg Peters (Belmont, St. Vincent) continued strong rebounding for the Eagles grabbing 11 boards. The Eagles took a 41-26 lead into the locker room at halftime. NU shot 50% from 2-point range and 54% from the 3-point line in the first half converting 7 of 13 attempts.
George Fox's leading scorers, Jack Martin (15ppg) and Evan Atwater (13ppg) were held to single digit scoring as they both scored 9 points for the Bruins (3-4). Alex Stockner and Steve Campbell picked up the slack for GFU as they both scored 12 points. GFU was held to 22% shooting from the 3-point arc and 35% from 2-point range.
"It was a satisfying win for us tonight, and I felt our guys came out strong and executed our game plan," stated head coach John Van Dyke. "George Fox always gives us a good effort on their home court, so it's great to come away with the victory. Now, our team has to prepare for final exams and #1 Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon next weekend at home."
The Eagles return home after two straight weeks on the road to host #1 Oregon Tech on Friday, December 19 and Southern Oregon U. on Saturday night, December 20.
