Northwest Loses Upset Bid to #1 OIT in Overtime

KIRKLAND, Wash. –  #1 Oregon Tech out scored Northwest U. 14 to 6 in the overtime period to defeat the upset minded Northwest University men tonight 94-86 in Cascade Conference play.

Oregon Tech’s Jguwon Hogges would give OIT  a slim three point lead (46-43) with his jumper with 13 seconds left after the first half saw 4 lead changes and 3 ties.

OIT would start the second half with a 5-0 run to go up by eight,  51-43, but then Northwest would go on their own 9-2 run to pull to within one point at 53-52 with 15:58 left in the contest. Ryan Beesley would put OIT up 58-54 at the 15:07 mark and then neither team would score until the 13:31 mark when a free throw by Tech’s Miles Daley would increase OIT’s lead to 59-54. NU would begin their comeback and make the score 67-65 on Blake Solomon’s 3-pointer with 9:45 left. Another Solomon trey would put NU into the lead 72-70 (8:42) but OIT’s Josh Wetzler would tie the score at 72 with his lay-up. Another Blake Solomon 3-pointer and a free throw by NU’s Eddie Coulson would give the Eagles an 80-78 lead with 39 seconds left. Solomon had a chance to put the game away with 7 seconds remaining as he stepped to the line for a 1 and 1 attempt and missed the first shot. Jguwon Hogges’ grabbed the rebound, dribbled the length of the floor and his pull up jumper in the lane with just  seconds left in regulation tied the game sending it into overtime.

The overtime belonged to OIT as they knocked down 3 field goals and 8 free throws to win their 13th consecutive game of the season and their third straight CCC victory. For Northwest, the loss snapped their seven game win streak and gave them their first conference loss as they fell to 2-1 in the CCC and 8-4 on the season.

Northwest U. will remain at home on Saturday as they host Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech travels to Olympia to play the Evergreen State College. The game between SOU and ESC was cancelled tonight due to the weather in Olympia.
